PHILADELPHIA – A Belgian Sheepdog named Soleil has been crowned Best in Show at the 2025 National Dog Show, triumphing over six other finalists at the annual canine competition. The win marks a significant moment for the Herding Group, of which Soleil is a member, and solidifies the breed’s standing among America’s most celebrated dogs.
The National Dog Show, a Thanksgiving Day tradition hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and broadcast by NBC, draws an estimated 20 million viewers annually. Soleil’s victory not only elevates the Belgian Sheepdog’s profile but also highlights the dedication of breeders and handlers who showcase these animals on a national stage. George, an American Foxhound, was named Reserve Best in Show.
Soleil secured her place in the final round after winning Best in the Herding Group, demonstrating remarkable poise and skill throughout the judging process. Judge Charlie Olvis praised Soleil’s performance, stating she “didn’t put its foot down wrong.Didn’t miss a beat. And it is in drop-dead gorgeous condition.”
Handler Martin described Soleil as being “just ’on’ today,” noting her ability to thrive in the energetic competition surroundings. “She loves the energy and she feels it. that’s her magic,” he added.
The American Kennel Club describes Belgian Sheepdogs as highly trainable herders, characterized as “bright, watchful and serious-minded.” The breed is known for its strong bond with its owners and requires consistent companionship. They have an average lifespan of 10 to 14 years.
Founded in 1879, the National Dog Show has been held annually sence 1933 and televised since 2002. Beyond the Best in Show competition, the event includes a variety of behind-the-scenes contests, such as a barking contest. Purina presented this year’s show.
