Belgian Politician Jo Vandeurzen Hospitalized After Stroke

Former Belgian Minister Jo Vandeurzen is in critical condition following a stroke suffered while on vacation in Salzburg, Austria, this week. Family members confirmed the severity of his condition to Belgian media, requesting privacy.

Vandeurzen, 67, served as a prominent figure in Belgian politics for over three decades, representing the Christian Democratic and Flemish (CD&V) party. He held the position of Federal Minister of Justice from December 2007 to December 2008, serving under the governments of Yves Leterme and Guy Verhofstadt. Subsequently, he was the Flemish Minister of Welfare, Health and Family from July 2009 to October 2019.

The stroke occurred during a ski holiday with his family, according to reports. He was immediately hospitalized in Salzburg. Intego, the healthcare group of which Vandeurzen is chairman, released a statement confirming the news and respecting the family’s request for privacy, stating that no further details would be released at this time.

Following his departure from active political life, Vandeurzen remained involved in various healthcare and educational organizations. His long career within CD&V saw him also serve as party chairman.
