What Does a Docent Do?
Central Library docents are volunteer guides who lead one-hour public tours, focusing on the art, architecture, and history of the library. They cater to a diverse audience, including walk-in visitors, groups, clubs, students, researchers, and special interest groups. Docents bring the library to life, sharing its stories and secrets with the community.

Meet the docents
Formed in 1980 as a nonprofit organization, the Central Library Docents comprise a diverse group of approximately 25 active members. While their backgrounds and ages vary, they share a common love for the Central Library and a passion for its history and resources. As one docent put it, everyone loves the Central Library and being immersed in the lore of the magnificent building and its rich and dynamic resources.
How to Become a Docent
Interested in joining the ranks of these dedicated volunteers? The next docent training program begins in September 2025 and consists of five sessions. The program includes slide lectures, detailed tours of the library building, and practice touring. To apply, complete an application. Following submission, applicants will be contacted for a brief interview in july or August.

What You’ll Learn
The five-week training program provides an intensive introduction to the art and design of the 1926 Goodhue building, the 1993 Bradley wing, and the McGuire gardens. The training combines classroom instruction with on-site education. The cost for training materials is $25, with scholarships available. After completing the training,new docents are paired with experienced mentors to learn the ropes of giving tours. Beyond tours, docents participate in seasonal parties, field trips, monthly board meetings, special programs, and continuing education.
Training Details
The 2025 docent training class sessions, taught by experienced docent educators, are scheduled for Sundays from 1:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Classes will be held in Meeting Room A at the Central Library, located at 630 5th St, downtown Los Angeles. Sunday parking under the building is available for $1 with library card validation.
