BBC Unveils First Look at Matthew Barry Crime Drama The Last Detectives
The BBC has released first-look images for The Last Detectives, a new crime drama created by Matthew Barry and produced by Nicola Shindler’s Quay Street Productions. Formerly titled Old Town Murders, the series follows an investigative team tackling murder cases against the coastal backdrop of Tenby in Wales.
Cast and Creative Team Behind the Series
Mark Lewis-Jones stars as DI Glyn Walsh alongside Steffan Rhodri as DS Sion Dearden, leading an investigative unit whose members include Bethan-Mary James as DC Remy Jones, Jordan Davies as DC Neil Miller, and Julie Graham as forensic biologist Pamela Thomas, with Catherine Ayers also featuring in the cast. The production reunites writer Matthew Barry and producer Nicola Shindler following their work on the BBC single drama Men Up. Shindler serves as an executive producer alongside Davina Earl for Quay Street Productions, while Rebecca Ferguson executive produces for the BBC alongside co-commissioner Nick Andrews for BBC Wales.
Behind the camera, Hannah Daniel wrote episode four, Andy Newbery directed the first four episodes while serving as executive producer, and Rhys Carter directed episodes five and six. Guy Hescott serves as series producer on the project, which has received Welsh Government support through Creative Wales and was filmed on location in Tenby, Cardiff, and along the South Wales coastline.
Production Background and Release Outlook
The project represents Shindler’s first series since Tip Toe, which came from Russell T. Davies. Matthew Barry described the show as a story about finding friendship and meaning in later life framed within a police procedural. ITV Studios is handling sales for the drama, though an exact broadcast premiere date has not yet been announced by the BBC.
