BBB Warns of Escalating Job Scams Targeting Unsuspecting Applicants

Employment Fraud Sees Significant Increase

Job seekers are facing a growing threat as scams impersonating employers surge, according to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). The organization has identified over 3,600 fraudulent schemes in the last three years, leading to severe data breaches and identity theft.

New Entrants Most Vulnerable

Individuals new to the job market, such as students, are particularly at risk. These applicants often lack familiarity with standard hiring procedures, making them susceptible to fraudulent tactics.

Julia Lewis of the BBB highlights the danger of immediate job offers. “If a business hires you on the spot, that would be a red flag for many, but perhaps not for somebody who is unfamiliar with common practices,” Lewis explained. Such rapid hiring is often a tactic to quickly obtain personal information.

The Federal Trade Commission reported that in 2023, over 130,000 people reported job scams, losing an estimated $1 billion collectively. This underscores the widespread nature of these fraudulent operations (FTC, 2024).

The Mechanics of Deception

These elaborate scams can result in the compromise of social media accounts and extensive data breaches. The primary goal of impersonation scams is often to steal sensitive personal data.

The Better Business Bureau is issuing a warning about rising employment scams.

The BBB advises job seekers to be vigilant and thoroughly research any potential employer. Be wary of offers that seem too good to be true or involve requests for upfront payments or personal banking details during the application process.
