Munich Legend Augenthaler Defends Hoeneß, Calls for Dialog with Matthäus
Klaus Augenthaler, a Bayern Munich legend, has offered insight into Uli Hoeneß’s recent public statements and ongoing tensions with Lothar Matthäus. Augenthaler believes the Honorary President of Bayern is simply unable to fully detach from the club. “Uli is over 18 and is trapped in football. He just can’t let go. but he never means bad,” Augenthaler said in an interview with Sport1.
Regarding Hoeneß’s televised critique of Bayern sporting director Eberl’s “thin skin,” Augenthaler stated, “I did not see the performance-unfortunately or thank God. Uli cannot let go, just as I can’t let go. He is just and sometimes confrontative.”
Augenthaler also acknowledged Hoeneß’s frustration with Bayern’s recent Champions League performance, noting, “Uli hurts what is happening in Bavaria. In the past few years you have played a lot of money because you only find four times into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.”
Despite the pointed criticism, Augenthaler defended Hoeneß’s intentions, saying, “Uli has developed so much that he himself believes that he can say everything. Uli did not meen anything bad, his heart is just red-white.” He also backed Eberl, stating, “I think it’s good what max said at the press conference… It was crucial that he spoke. I didn’t doubt a second anyway. Uli certainly didn’t want to hurt Max.”
augenthaler emphasized the challenges facing Eberl, stating, ”The biggest challenge is to get good players for little transfer. But Eberl has a future at FC Bayern if he can work in peace.” Currently active in Bayern’s youth program, Augenthaler suggested a direct conversation could resolve the dispute between Hoeneß and Matthäus, saying, “Maybe both should just talk.”
