Basketball Champions League: Pathway to NBA Europe?

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Geneva – Basketball Champions League (BCL) clubs were informed this week that the 2026-27 season will serve as a qualifying pathway for a new 16-team European league backed by the NBA and FIBA, with the finalists of the 2027 BCL Final Four securing two of the four open spots in the inaugural 2027-28 season, sources confirmed.

The announcement, made during a meeting in Geneva, details a plan to launch the competition widely referred to as NBA Europe. The BCL will function as the primary qualification route, according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions.

While the structure of the new league is designed around 12 permanent franchises in major European markets including London, Paris, and Madrid, four places will be open for annual promotion. Beyond the two spots reserved for the BCL finalists, the remaining two will be determined through end-of-season qualifying tournaments in late June 2027, with participation determined by performance in domestic leagues.

The initiative represents a landmark joint venture between the NBA and FIBA, with the new league scheduled to tip off in October 2027. The BCL’s role in qualifying teams underscores the importance of the competition as a feeder system for the NBA-backed venture.

Officials from both the NBA and FIBA were present at the Geneva meeting to outline the plan to BCL club representatives. The details of the qualifying tournaments for the remaining two spots are still being finalized, but are expected to prioritize teams with strong domestic league records.

The Basketball Champions League website currently highlights ongoing regular season play across multiple groups, with teams from various European nations competing for advancement. The league’s official site provides live stats, game schedules, and team rosters, but makes no mention of the NBA Europe qualifying pathway as of today.
