Baseball Legend and Medical Pioneer Tommy John Dies at 83

August 17, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Former Major League Baseball pitcher Tommy John, whose name became permanently linked to the revolutionary elbow surgery that preserved his career and countless others, died on Sunday at age 83, according to statements from the Los Angeles Dodgers and officials. John spent 26 seasons in the majors, most notably with the Dodgers and the New York Yankees.

The Bionic Man and the 1974 UCL Breakthrough

John’s storied career shifted dramatically in 1974 while pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers, when a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his elbow threatened to end his playing days prematurely. Dr. Frank Jobe, the team doctor at the time, performed a pioneering procedure that had never been performed before, replacing the torn ligament with a tendon harvested from elsewhere in the pitcher’s body.

Rather than relying solely on conventional methods, John incorporated unconventional rehabilitation techniques, notably squeezing Silly Putty. John recalled to The New York Times in 1977 that Buhler recommended Silly Putty because it offered continuous resistance throughout the entire hand squeeze compared to a standard rubber ball.

The rehabilitation paid off. John returned to the Dodgers rotation in 1976, making 31 starts and posting two shutouts. By 1977, he recorded the first of three 20-win seasons, helping the Dodgers to a National League pennant and proving that complex orthopedic interventions could successfully bridge the gap back to elite competition.

Front-Office Impact and Franchise Legacy

While the medical world redefined sports longevity through the procedure that now bears his name, John maintained a high level of productivity on the mound. Following his initial success in Los Angeles, John signed a free-agent deal in the winter of 1978 to join the New York Yankees, a squad that had beaten the Dodgers in consecutive World Series.

The Yankees described John in official statements following his death as a bedrock of their pitching rotation and a fan favorite, noting that the fame of his surgery often overshadowed his exceptional pitching numbers, which included consecutive 20-win seasons in pinstripes. Dodgers President Stan Kasten emphasized that John’s courageous role in becoming the first to have the procedure could not be overstated, citing an impact felt by ballplayers across generations.

The Modern Medical and Economic Footprint

John is survived by his wife and three children: Tommy, Travis, and Tamara, as reported by the Los Angeles Dodgers. His passing closes a chapter on a 26-year career that spanned six major league franchises, beginning in Cleveland in 1963, moving through Chicago and Los Angeles, and concluding with a lasting legacy as both a fierce competitor and an accidental medical pioneer.
