Bart Somers Shares Mechelen Integration Model in Innsbruck

November 7, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The Diocese of Innsbruck imported integration strategies from the Belgian city of Mechelen on November 7, 2026, to counter rising societal tensions, Kathpress reported.

Bischof Hermann Glettler and the Unternehmerische Hochschule MCI invited Mechelen Mayor Bart Somers to Innsbruck for discussions with students, policymakers, and civic leaders. The visit followed a prior student excursion to Belgium and culminated in a symposium titled “The Future of Democracy and Europe.”

Dialogue at the Bischofshaus and the MCI Symposium

Discussions began on the eve of the symposium at the Bischofshaus. Participants included European Forum Alpbach President Othmar Karas, theologian Michaela Quast-Neulinger, Innsbruck Vice Mayor Georg Willi, Landespolizeidirektor Helmut Tomac, Johannes Schranz from AMS Tirol, and representatives of the Katholische Jugend.

The subsequent Friday symposium focused on strengthening community cohesion. Attendees analyzed ways to prevent social fragmentation, aggressive isolation, and the rise of parallel societies.

The Mechelen Model of Social Cohesion

Mechelen houses residents of more than 130 nationalities and has earned international recognition for its preventative work against social division. Glettler stated that integration in the Belgian city succeeds because authorities treat all inhabitants as equally valued citizens through a multifaceted bundle of initiatives.

Somers outlined the core philosophy behind Mechelen’s transformation over the past 25 years:

The decisive shift in perspective was to seek what we have in common and to treat every person as a first-class citizen regardless of their background.

Somers added that the model relies on a dual commitment: 100 percent focus on security for all residents paired with 100 percent energy directed toward building relationships. He stressed that individuals who hold first-class citizenship status must also behave accordingly, noting that cohesion requires clear rules, active participation, and deliberate investment in community life.
