Barneville-Carteret collective opposes cinema redevelopment project
A century-old Art Deco cinema building in Barneville-Carteret has ignited a sharp local dispute after the municipal majority advanced a redevelopment project that opponents condemn as a forced measure ignoring public mobilization, actu.fr reported.
Collective Opposes Cinema Demolition to Preserve Architectural Heritage
The municipal council voted on October 1, 2026, on plans concerning the local cinematic infrastructure. Following that meeting, the “Sauvegardons le Cinéma de la Plage” collective issued a press statement denouncing the decision. The collective argues that the project disregards residents who wish to preserve both the active cinema and the architectural structure itself. Instead of demolition and new construction, the opposing group champions a gradual renovation of the existing centennial building, citing advantages for architectural heritage, local stone masonry work, and the carbon footprint of the operation.
Critics Question Temporary Venue Permits and Facilities
The municipality maintains that its project aims to sustain and upgrade the local film offering. However, the operational plan during construction has added fuel to the debate. The temporary transfer of screenings to the Salle des Douits worries critics, who point to potential shortcomings like the absence of an inclined floor and question the venue’s operating permits.
Management Structure and Equipment Costs Remain Under Review
Financial and managerial questions also remain open. During municipal discussions, Bertrand Ladune questioned Mayor David Legouet regarding the identity of future operators and equipment estimates ranging between 150,000 and 200,000 euros. Legouet responded that the management structure is still under review and that these figures originated from estimates provided by the current manager.
October 24 Rally Planned by Opponents
To press for an official review of the building preservation alternative, the collective invites Côte des Isles residents and cinema patrons to gather outside the establishment on Saturday, October 24, at 3 p.m.
