Labor Violations Continue at barcelona’s Camp Nou Renovation
Barcelona‘s recently completed stadium renovation has been marred by further labor violations, according to reports from Spanish sports newspaper Marca. Authorities discovered 79 Turkish workers on the construction site lacking the required work permits.
The investigation, conducted by the Treball authority, focused on subcontractor Extreme Works, which supplied welders, electricians, and technicians for the project. extreme Works has been fined €1.09 million for employing workers without proper legal documentation for several months. Following the investigation’s launch, the company terminated the employment of all affected workers and repatriated them to Turkey, though reports indicate some have not yet returned.
This incident is not isolated. Violations of labor regulations during the stadium renovation are ongoing, with total fines now exceeding €3 million and over 200 cases currently under review.
Workers claim they were misled, promised legal employment and necessary paperwork before arriving in Spain, only to find themselves without permits or guarantees. Attempts to resolve the situation thru union representation reportedly led to swift dismissal.
Despite the ongoing controversy,Barcelona recently hosted its first match at the renovated Camp Nou,securing a 4-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao. The team is scheduled to play Alavés at the stadium on November 29th, with kickoff at 16:15 CET.
