Band Spotlight: Discover Their New Music

March 23, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Düsseldorf, Germany – The influential krautrock band Neu!, formed in 1971 following the departure of founding members Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother from Kraftwerk, continues to resonate with musicians and critics decades after its initial run. Though the group experienced limited commercial success during its active years from 1971 to 1975 and a brief reunion in the mid-1980s, Neu! is now widely recognized as a pivotal force in the development of experimental rock and electronic music.

Neu! released three studio albums – Neu! (1972), Neu! 2 (1973), and Neu! 75 (1975) – all produced by Conny Plank, who has been described as a “hidden member” of the band due to his significant creative contribution. The band’s sound was characterized by its pioneering use of the “motorik” beat, a minimalist 4/4 rhythm that became a defining element of krautrock. This rhythmic approach, and the band’s overall experimental nature, has had a lasting impact on genres ranging from electronica to punk.

The origins of Neu! are directly linked to the evolution of Kraftwerk. Klaus Dinger joined Kraftwerk during the recording of their debut album in 1970, and Michael Rother was recruited after its completion. A brief period followed with a lineup including Rother, Dinger, and Ralf Hütter, resulting in a few concerts and a television appearance on the German program Beatclub. Still, creative differences led Dinger and Rother to separate from Hütter and pursue a new musical direction with Plank.

Despite their relatively small discography, Neu!’s influence extends to a diverse array of artists. Bands like The Sex Pistols, Public Image Ltd., and David Bowie have all cited Neu! as an inspiration. The band’s innovative approach to rhythm and sound design continues to be studied and emulated by contemporary musicians. Neu! maintained a website, neu2010.com, which serves as an archive of their work and legacy.

The band’s lineup evolved over time, including members Eberhard Kranemann, Uli Trepte, Thomas Dinger, Hans Lampe, Konrad Mathieu, and Georg Sessenhausen, in addition to the core duo of Dinger and Rother. Neu! disbanded in 1975, but their music continues to be discovered and appreciated by new generations of listeners.
