Band Breakups: Test Your Music Knowledge with This Quiz

March 23, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Four years after Zayn Malik’s departure from One Direction sent shockwaves through the pop world, the phenomenon of band members leaving before achieving widespread fame continues to fascinate. This week marks eleven years since Malik announced his exit, but the history of “nearly-men” in music stretches back decades, encompassing artists who were on the cusp of superstardom with their groups only to depart shortly before the breakthrough.

Perhaps the most well-known example remains Pete Best, the drummer for The Beatles who was replaced by Ringo Starr in 1962, just a year before the band ignited “Beatlemania.” Best’s story has become an archetype of the musician who missed out on monumental success, becoming, as one account notes, “famous for not being famous.”

The pattern isn’t limited to the 1960s. Jason Everman experienced a similar fate, being fired from both Nirvana in 1989 and Soundgarden in 1990 – both bands subsequently achieving massive commercial success. The New York Times described Everman’s situation as being “Pete Best twice.”

However, departure doesn’t always mean a career stalled. Dave Mustaine, Metallica’s original lead guitarist, was dismissed from the band in 1983. He went on to form Megadeth, which itself achieved significant commercial success, selling 50 million records worldwide. Similarly, Mark Wahlberg, before becoming a successful actor, singer, and model, was a member of New Kids on the Block before leaving the group.

The reasons for these pre-fame departures vary. While some, like Best, were simply replaced, others, such as Everman and Mustaine, were fired. The common thread is the timing – a departure occurring just before the band’s ascent to mainstream recognition. These individuals are often not considered part of the band’s “classic” lineups, despite their earlier contributions.
