Baldur’s Gate 1 Free Trial: Experience the Classic RPG in BG3
A demo is now available allowing players to experience the prologue of the original Baldur’s Gate, recreated within the engine of Baldur’s Gate 3. The project, spearheaded by a modding team calling themselves Deathbringer’s Reign, launched on Nexus Mods on March 22, 2026, according to a report from Bell of Lost Souls.
The modders successfully unlocked the full development tools for Baldur’s Gate 3, overcoming initial restrictions placed on level and campaign creation by Larian Studios. This access, achieved through exploiting the structure of the game’s implementation, has enabled the ambitious undertaking of rebuilding the 1998 role-playing game within its sequel’s framework.
The current demo focuses on the opening section of Baldur’s Gate, specifically the events unfolding in and around Candlekeep. The team’s leader, known as 786r786, told Rock Paper Shotgun that the positive reception to the prologue has spurred consideration of a full campaign recreation. “I received a lot of requests from fans of the original games to turn it into a full campaign, along with offers from some incredibly talented modders who volunteered to aid,” 786r786 stated. Creating a standalone campaign, the modder explained, presents fewer challenges than directly expanding the base Baldur’s Gate 3 game, as it avoids the complexities of integrating with the existing game’s vast array of scenarios.
Baldur’s Gate 3, developed by Larian Studios, originally launched on August 31, 2023, for PC and PlayStation 5. The game is based on the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing system. The Baldur’s Gate 3 Wiki details extensive information on the game’s classes, skills, and quests, and currently lists Patch 8 as being in stress test.
The modding community’s efforts follow Larian Studios’ release of modding tools, which initially had some features locked. The ability to recreate the first Baldur’s Gate within Baldur’s Gate 3 demonstrates the potential of the game’s modding capabilities, according to Bell of Lost Souls.
