WAYNESBORO,VA – A majestic bald eagle,grounded near Rocky Mount following a territorial dispute,is set to be released back into the wild tomorrow after a month-long recovery from lead poisoning. “The first step was to chelate the lead – essentially, remove it from the bird’s system,” Gillespie explained. “Once the lead was addressed, the eagle quickly regained its strength.”
The source of the lead poisoning is believed to be fragments of lead ammunition left behind in deer carcasses. Eagles often scavenge on these remains, inadvertently ingesting the toxic metal. Gillespie notes this is a widespread problem.”In roughly three out of four eagles we admit to the center, we find evidence of lead exposure.”
Lead poisoning weakens eagles, making them vulnerable and possibly causing them to become grounded – as was the case with this individual. The territorial dispute that initially brought the eagle to attention may have been exacerbated by its weakened condition.

No talking, no radio, no podcasts – we want to minimize any stress on the bird.”
