Bailey Humphrey Ban: AFL Tribunal Upholds Suspension, Suns Face Injury Blows

March 24, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Gold Coast Suns forward Bailey Humphrey has lost his appeal against a two-match suspension for a dangerous tackle on Richmond’s Maurice Rioli, the AFL Tribunal confirmed Tuesday.

The decision is a significant setback for the ladder-leading Suns, already grappling with a hamstring injury to star recruit Christian Petracca, which will sideline him for at least a month. Brownlow Medal winner Matt Rowell remains unavailable due to a finger injury, further straining Gold Coast’s depth.

Humphrey was initially handed the two-match ban following a Match Review Officer (MRO) assessment that graded the tackle as careless conduct, high contact and high impact. He pleaded not guilty, arguing the tackle on Rioli was not unreasonable or dangerous, and contesting the “high impact” grading. Humphrey testified that Rioli’s own movement contributed to the 360-degree rotation during the tackle.

Suns advocate Adrian Anderson argued that Rioli’s arms being free “cushioned the blow significantly” and limited the potential for injury. However, the AFL countered that Humphrey breached his duty of care to Rioli by slinging him to the ground with “excessive force.”

The Tribunal agreed with the AFL’s assessment, finding that Humphrey “accelerated the momentum and the rotation, and slings Rioli with considerable force in turn.” The jury stated that even knowing Rioli had both arms free, Humphrey should have anticipated that the force of the tackle would not be adequately mitigated.

Richmond’s medical report indicated Rioli experienced a sore neck and was treated for whiplash, but did not reveal any concussion symptoms. The Tribunal dismissed a suggestion from Anderson that the whiplash was caused by a separate incident later in the match, stating the medical report did not support that conclusion.

The suspension rules Humphrey out of Gold Coast’s upcoming matches against Melbourne and Sydney following a bye in round three. The fixture against Melbourne carries added weight, as several Victorian clubs, including the Demons, had previously expressed interest in acquiring Humphrey during last year’s trade period. The match was already being billed as a significant contest given Petracca’s departure from Melbourne at the finish of the 2025 season.

Petracca underwent scans on Sunday to assess the severity of his hamstring injury, with the club stating they are working to determine the “optimal course of action.”

Despite the setbacks, Gold Coast remains atop the AFL ladder with a 3-0 record and a percentage of 191, narrowly ahead of the Western Bulldogs.
