Vietnamese karate fighter Nguyen Ngoc Tram secured a gold medal in the women’s team kata event at the 2025 Asian Karate Championships in Uzbekistan, marking a return to the top podium for Vietnam in this discipline after a decade.
The team, comprised of Bui Ngoc Nhi, Hoang Thi Thu Uyen, Nguyen Ngoc Tram, and Nguyen Thi Phuong, achieved a combined score of 42.1 points, narrowly defeating China, who scored 41.7. This victory was a highlight of the championships for Vietnam, which ultimately claimed three gold medals and one bronze, finishing third overall in the medal tally.
In addition to the team kata gold, Hoang Thi My Tam won gold in the women’s individual kumite 55kg category, defeating Iran’s Saadati Fateme 5-0 in the final. The Vietnamese team also secured gold in the women’s team kumite event, defeating Kazakhstan 2-0. Nguyen Ngoc Tram also contributed to the medal count with a bronze in women’s individual kata.
Head coach Duong Hoang Long lauded the team’s performance, attributing the success to the athletes’ dedication, and determination. Kazakhstan topped the medal table with four golds, followed by Japan.
Nguyen Ngoc Tram’s achievement in the team kata event is particularly notable, representing a significant milestone for Vietnamese karate after a ten-year absence from the top of the podium in this category. The World Karate Federation (WKF) maintains a current ranking for competitors, including Nguyen Ngoc Tram, reflecting her standing in the sport.
