Bad Magpie: A Tale of Melancholy and Mischief
Bad Magpie introduces players to a wounded corvid seeking connection through chaotic antics, blending joyful anarchy with profound existential melancholy. Developed by Milktooth and designed by co-founder Daisy Fernandez, the indie title turns a fleeting lockdown observation of an incomplete V-shaped flock into a poignant study of avian isolation.
The Lockdown Inspiration Behind the Feathered Chaos
During the 2020 lockdowns, Milktooth games designer and co-founder Daisy Fernandez lay in the grass and watched a flock of birds pass overhead. She noticed a conspicuous gap in their formation, an incomplete V-shape that lingered in her memory long after the afternoon ended. According to Fernandez, someone later told her about a “missing man” formation, which serves as an aerial salute to a fallen pilot. That melancholic image forms the emotional core of Bad Magpie, a game that pairs bright, gleeful destruction with a deeper narrative about loneliness.
Going by the developer mantra that making someone laugh requires making them cry first, the studio built its protagonist around a simple psychological void.

Balancing Anarchy and Melancholy in Modern Game Design
Rather than relying solely on high-speed action or straightforward puzzle-solving, the title uses environmental disruption as an emotional outlet for its avian lead. Players navigating the wreckage left behind by the wounded corvid engage with a character striving to fill a literal and figurative absence in the sky.
