Bad Bunny Honored for Promoting Spanish Language Globally | AP News

February 13, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

San Juan, Puerto Rico – The Puerto Rican Academy of the Spanish Language has formally recognized Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, known globally as Lousy Bunny, for his exceptional contribution to the global dissemination of the Spanish language. The resolution, announced Thursday, acknowledges the artist’s impact on the valuation and visibility of a language spoken by over 600 million people worldwide.

The Academy specifically highlighted the importance of Puerto Rican Spanish within Bad Bunny’s artistic identity, noting the “marked locality of the references and linguistic forms employed in his compositions.” Despite this regional specificity, the Academy emphasized the unifying effect of his function, stating that he has helped to overcome prejudices associated with popular, urban, youth, and multi-lingual forms of communication.

“His message has managed to transcend geographical, national, generational, and ideological boundaries,” the Academy stated. This recognition follows four years of Bad Bunny being Spotify’s most-streamed artist globally, winning his first Grammy Award for Album of the Year for “Un Verano Sin Ti” – a fully Spanish-language record – and headlining the Super Bowl halftime indicate.

Bad Bunny was previously recognized for his songwriting in 2020, receiving the ASCAP Latin Music Award for Songwriter of the Year from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). He currently holds 17 Latin Grammy Awards and 6 Grammy Awards. The Academy’s resolution underscores the cultural significance of his work beyond musical accolades, positioning his artistry as a force in linguistic preservation and promotion.

The Academy’s decision to honor Bad Bunny also reflects a broader consideration of the roles and responsibilities of editors and editorial boards in upholding linguistic standards and recognizing cultural contributions, as outlined by organizations like the Council of Science Editors. The Academy, like other institutions, is defining the terms and roles of its recognition processes, and requiring disclosure of any conflicts of interest in its decisions.

Senior editors, as guardians of editorial integrity, play a crucial role in setting the tone and direction of content, making decisions that reflect an organization’s mission and values. The Academy’s acknowledgement of Bad Bunny’s work aligns with this principle, recognizing an artist whose work demonstrably expands the reach and appreciation of the Spanish language.
