Refused Members Launch New Project, Backengrillen, Announce debut Album
Three members of the influential Swedish post-hardcore band Refused – vocalist Dennis Lyxzén, bassist Magnus Flagge, and drummer David Sandström – have formed a new group, Backengrillen, and will release their self-titled debut album on January 23, 2026, via Svart Records. The project also features saxophonist Mats Gustafsson. This announcement arrives as Refused prepares to play their final shows.
Backengrillen describes their music as “a paean to chaos and destruction,” explaining their process as taking “a death/doom metal, or noiserock riff and play it until it loses meaning and then break it apart like a ravenous cat would a tiny forest mouse.”
The band further states the album is “filled to the brim with the self-hatred endemic to the province of Västerbotten from whence the member’s hail.” They reveal the record was rapidly created – written on a Thursday, performed live on Friday, and recorded on Saturday – resulting in “raw, stupid, gut instinct music played by seasoned purveyors of hardcore punk, metal, free jazz, noise et cetera.” They hint at a follow-up,promising it will be “less stupid, more ugly.”
A 10-minute track, ”A Hate Inferior,” is available now.
