Shayon Sanyal, a builder at Amazon Web Services (AWS), received the annual AWSome Legend Award last week in Seattle. The award, presented at the AWS ASCENT Conference, recognizes individuals who exemplify Amazon’s Leadership Principles and deliver exceptional customer outcomes.
Sanyal, reflecting on the experience, shared five lessons learned during the year he described as the “hardest of his career,” a period focused on the intersection of agentic AI and Amazon Aurora. He emphasized that consistent effort often outweighs innate talent, advocating for a philosophy of continuous learning and knowledge sharing. “Teach everything you know,” he stated, adding that openly documenting one’s work – “building in public” – can be a powerful strategy.
The AWSome Legend Award is the most prestigious honor within the AWSome Awards program, a global employee recognition initiative for AWS Sales, Marketing, and Global Services (SMGS). According to CJ Taylor, one of the first recipients of the award in 2024, it is given to less than half a percent of AWS builders who demonstrate extraordinary contributions over a year or more. Taylor noted that 120 individuals from 19 countries were recognized at the 2024 SMGS Kickoff in Seattle.
Sanyal too highlighted the importance of embracing vulnerability and acknowledging imposter syndrome, stating it “never leaves.” He encouraged those pursuing challenging goals – certifications, interviews, or new skills – to persevere despite self-doubt. “You don’t need permission to start. You just need to begin,” he wrote.
Aumaporn Armradist was also honored as a 2024 AWS Legend Award winner in February 2025, representing one of 120 global recipients and one of only four from the marketing sector. The award program, as described by Greg Pearson, VP at AWS, was conceived to recognize and celebrate significant contributions to the company and its customers.
Sanyal’s recognition follows a period of intensive work on agentic AI and Aurora, tackling problems where established solutions were lacking. He acknowledged the support of colleagues and AWS leadership, including Matt Garman, Greg Pearson, Uwem Ukpong, and Rahul Pathak, emphasizing their curiosity and genuine engagement.
