Bayonne Rugby Club Rocked by Tensions Between President and Manager Ahead of potential Truce
Bayonne, France – Aviron Bayonnais, currently fifth in the Top 14 standings and undefeated at home, is reportedly experiencing notable internal conflict between club president Philippe Tayeb and manager Grégory Patat, just before a potential period of calm.
According to reporting from Sud Ouest, a heated meeting took place in late October, following Bayonne’s 49-7 victory over Montauban. During the exchange, Tayeb reportedly criticized Patat’s management style, stating, “You are not a good manager, Laurent [Travers] must take it all back.” This friction has reportedly intensified as the arrival of Laurent Travers as director of rugby.
patat, whose contract was extended through 2028, has overseen a period of success for the club, including a historic qualification for the French championship semi-finals in 2023 – a first in 42 years. Though, the future of his assistant coaches, whose contracts expire in June, is currently uncertain. The club has reportedly contacted Thibault Giroud, performance director of UBB, regarding a potential role, without Patat’s direct involvement.
Patat has publicly stated his desire to retain his current staff, specifically highlighting loïc Louit, the physical preparation coach. He also noted his role in discussions regarding staff changes, stating, “I will participate in discussions, it is contained in my missions on my job description.”
Sud Ouest reports that Tayeb told Patat during the contentious meeting, “If I extended you, it’s just as you had public opinion on your side.” This statement underscores a growing divide between the club’s ambitious president and its popular manager, who enjoys strong support from players and fans.
