New Castle County Officers Hailed for Preventing Potential Attack at University of delaware
University of delaware Police, wiht assistance from New Castle County officers, have averted a potential terrorist attack after discovering a loaded handgun-modified to function as a submachine gun-along with body armor and attack plans inside a vehicle on campus. Luqmaan Kahn was arrested at the scene and is believed to have been planning the attack.
The swift action by law enforcement has drawn widespread praise from university officials and state legislators, highlighting the critical role of proactive policing in safeguarding the community. “I can’t thank you officers enough for following your instincts, conducting a thorough investigation, and, at the end of the day, averting a terrorist attack,” said University of Delaware police Chief Patrick Ogden. The incident underscores the ongoing threat of campus violence and the importance of vigilance in protecting educational institutions.
Officers initiated the investigation after observing a vehicle with its lights on. Inside, they found the weapon, protective gear, and a notebook detailing plans to attack the campus. New Castle County police Chief Col. james Leonard III commended the officers, stating, “The pride that this organization has in you is something that you should feel today and for the remainder of your career.”
The officers involved-Jay Scerbo, Christopher Hewlitt, and nathan Jupiter-downplayed their role, emphasizing that their actions were part of their routine duties. “it’s day in and day out for us,” Officer Hewlitt explained. “This just happened to be something a little different and outside the scope of our day-to-day investigation.” Officer Jupiter added, “I’m just appreciative that we were able to stop this threat before something terrible happened.”
Delaware State Senator Bryan Townsend expressed gratitude on behalf of the state, simply stating, “Truly, truly, thank you.” The officers have received recognition from the Delaware State House and Senate for their swift thinking and dedication to public safety.
