Jake Weatherald Named in Australia‘s Ashes Squad,Pushing for Test debut
Perth,Australia – Uncapped South Australian batter Jake Weatherald is in contention for a potential Test debut after being named in Australia’s squad for the upcoming Ashes series, commencing November 21st at optus Stadium. The inclusion of the 29-year-old alongside established stars signals a competitive selection landscape as Australia prepares to defend the urn against England.
Weatherald’s selection comes as Marnus Labuschagne demonstrates improved form following adjustments made after being omitted from the West Indies tour. According to selector George Bailey,Labuschagne proactively sought clarity on the requirements for a potential recall, focusing on refining his batting technique rather than solely chasing runs. Labuschagne has already amassed five centuries this season.
The full Australia squad includes: Steve Smith (captain),Sean Abbott,Scott Boland,Alex Carey,Brendan Doggett,Cameron Green,Josh Hazlewood,Travis Head,Josh Inglis,Usman Khawaja,Marnus Labuschagne,Nathan lyon,Mitchell Starc,Jake Weatherald and Beau Webster.
Bailey emphasized the importance of a specific batting method for Labuschagne’s return, stating, “It was a very clear message that the runs would be a byproduct of some of the other things that we wanted to see… a method and a way of batting and some technical things that we wanted to see.”
