AUSTIN – The City of Austin has extended the activation of it’s weather shelter system through Sunday, January 25, 2026, to provide refuge for individuals experiencing homelessness during the ongoing cold weather. Registration for shelter access is available between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM each day at the designated intake location.
The decision to extend the shelter activation comes as temperatures remain dangerously low, posing a meaningful risk to those without adequate protection. Austin’s Homeless Strategy Office coordinates the shelter operations, working with local non-profit organizations to ensure sufficient capacity and resources. Currently, the primary shelter location is the Recreation Center at 221 E. 5th Street. Transportation is available from the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH) located at 501 E. 6th Street. Individuals seeking shelter are encouraged to arrive at the ARCH before 6:00 PM to facilitate transportation to the Recreation Center. The Austin Resource Center for the Homeless serves as a central hub for services.
