Audi Announces Billion US Factory Investment in Georgia Amid Tariffs

Audi Announces $4 Billion US Factory Investment in Georgia Amid Tariffs

October 25, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Audi will spend $4bn to build its first manufacturing plant in the US in Macon, Georgia, as its parent company Volkswagen deals with steep trade tariffs imposed by Donald Trump. The announcement came during a midterm campaign rally on Saturday, where Audi chief executive Gernot Döllner joined Trump on stage.

The Georgia Investment and Production Targets

The new manufacturing facility in Macon will target an annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles, creating approximately 4,500 jobs. Construction is scheduled to begin as early as next month, with production targeted for the early 2030s according to coverage. The plant will produce Audi’s Q7, Q8, and Q9 SUVs for the North American market, shifting some production lines previously located in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Trump described the project as a historic milestone, claiming during his rally speech in Perry, Georgia, that it represents the single largest investment in modern US auto industry history. He told attendees that the factory proves his tariff policies are successfully drawing manufacturing jobs back to domestic soil.

EU Tariffs Cost Volkswagen 5bn Euros Annually

The expansion into the US market arrives while Volkswagen struggles with the impact of import tariffs. Volkswagen has stated that Trump’s 15% tariffs on imports from the European Union cost the group up to €5bn annually, excluding the downstream impact of lower sales volumes. These trade pressures have created a significant burden, prompting the automaker to build a new factory in the United States to produce SUVs.

At the same time, Volkswagen has blamed job losses and restructuring needs on intense competition, tariffs, and the shift to electric vehicles. Corporate leadership has attributed these restructuring moves to intense competition from Chinese manufacturers alongside the rising cost of import tariffs and the capital requirements of transitioning toward electric vehicles for markets outside the US. Audi itself has absorbed heavy pressure from the administration’s active preference for petrol-powered engines over battery electric vehicles.

Factory Announcement Coincides with Georgia Midterm Elections

The factory announcement coincides with a fiercely contested midterm election cycle in Georgia, where Republicans are fighting to retain control of both houses of Congress. Republican candidates face difficult polling numbers amid voter anxiety regarding higher fuel prices stemming from foreign trade disputes. Döllner defended his appearance alongside the president at the political rally by stating the move was made out of respect for the US market.

We are planning to bring our biggest and our most premium SUVs, and produce them here in Macon, Georgia. This is a long-term investment because we believe in the American market.

While the administration points to the multi-billion-dollar commitment as vindication of its protectionist trade strategy, employment figures across the broader US vehicle and parts manufacturing sector have trended downward since the current administration took office. Volkswagen's leadership continues to manage the dual challenge of avoiding punitive import duties while preserving its premium market share among American consumers who show sustained demand for large-displacement petrol SUVs.
