Auburn AD John cohen Consults Broadcasters, Former Players in Coaching Search

Auburn Athletic Director John Cohen is actively seeking input from a variety of sources as the university searches for a new head football coach, aiming to make a decision within 24 hours after the Iron Bowl on November 29. Cohen stated he’s been speaking with coaches and broadcasters from across the country, noting they “have some feel” for potential candidates. However, he emphasized that former players are the group he’s leaning on most, notably those who have had time removed from their college careers.

Cohen is prioritizing a coach with an “edge” who will push players,a sentiment echoed by current Auburn players he has consulted. He’s looking for former student-athletes, even those currently in the NFL, who can attest to a coach’s ability to challenge them while maintaining a supportive relationship. “When you get those combination of things,I believe you’re onto something,” Cohen said.

The coaching search is intensifying alongside searches at other programs nationwide, but Cohen expressed doubt Auburn would delay a decision past the early signing period, December 3-5. Auburn faces Mercer this Saturday at 1 p.m. CT on SEC Network+ before the Iron Bowl matchup with Alabama.
