Breaking News: Justice Department Chief of Staff to Depart Amid Internal Shifts
WASHINGTON – The Justice Department is seeing further personnel changes as Attorney General’s Chief of Staff Ryan Mizelle is set to depart, following a period of internal adjustments and high-profile cases. Mizelle’s exit comes shortly after Emil Bove was confirmed as an appellate judge in July, after a brief tenure in top DOJ roles.
Mizelle’s departure marks a significant shift within the department, occurring as the justice Department navigates ongoing legal battles and internal restructuring. He served as acting associate attorney general and actively defended Trump management policies, including executive orders targeting large law firms, as reported on April 8, 2025.
During his time at the DOJ,mizelle was also vocal on X,defending the department’s work and criticizing what he perceived as judicial overreach, notably regarding the case against Adams. Prior to his recent roles, Mizelle held top legal positions at the Department of Homeland Security, the White House counsel’s office, and the deputy attorney general’s office during the first Trump administration.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche praised Mizelle’s contributions, stating, “He played a key role in advancing the President’s America First agenda here at the Department, and his efforts strengthened our mission to protect the American people. We are grateful for his service, and he will be greatly missed.”
CNN has reached out to the White House for comment. It remains unclear where Mizelle will be headed next.
