Belo Horizonte, Brazil – Atlético Mineiro salvaged a 1-1 draw against Independiente del Valle in teh first leg of the Copa Sudamericana semifinals on Tuesday, leaving their chances of reaching the final hanging in the balance. A late goal from the combined efforts of Hulk and Dudu negated an earlier penalty converted by Independiente’s Sornoza, setting up a crucial return leg in Belo Horizonte next Tuesday.

Independiente del Valle had reached this stage after eliminating Once caldas of Colombia. Mercado, valued at $5 million and reportedly attracting interest from Sporting Braga, proved a constant threat for the hosts with his runs from the left wing. Atlético Mineiro’s best prospect in the first half came from Bernard, who shot wide after a save from the Independiente defense.
