Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges as Fossil Fuel Dependence Declines
According to the latest data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the world added a record 295 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity in 2022, marking a significant increase from previous years. This growth was driven primarily by solar and wind energy, which together accounted for over 90% of all new installations.
The report highlights that solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity expanded by 163 GW, while wind energy saw an addition of 117 GW. These figures represent a substantial shift away from fossil fuels, with coal-fired power generation declining for the first time in over a decade.

“The transition to renewables is accelerating faster than ever,” said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA. “We are seeing unprecedented investment in clean energy technologies, which is crucial for meeting global climate goals.”
“Renewable energy is no longer a niche market—it is the backbone of the world’s energy future,” added a spokesperson from the Global Wind Energy Council.
In Europe, countries like Germany and Spain have led the charge, with Germany installing over 5 GW of new solar capacity alone in 2022. Meanwhile, China remains the global leader in renewable energy deployment, contributing nearly half of all new installations worldwide.
Despite these advancements, challenges remain. The IRENA report notes that global energy demand is still growing, and the transition must be even faster to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. “We need to triple the current rate of renewable energy deployment by 2030 to stay on track with the Paris Agreement,” La Camera warned.
Investment in renewables also reached new heights, with global funding surpassing $360 billion in 2022. This includes both public and private sector contributions, reflecting growing confidence in the sector’s long-term viability.
Looking ahead, IRENA projects that renewable energy could supply up to 85% of global electricity by 2050, if current trends continue and policy support remains strong.
