ASUS ROG Equalizer Power Cable Prevents 12V-2×6 PSU Overheating

April 10, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

ASUS has launched the ROG Equalizer, a 12V-2×6 PCIe power cable designed to mitigate the risk of GPU connector melting by balancing current distribution across its pins.

The cable is engineered for high-power graphics cards drawing up to 600W, such as the GeForce RTX 5090. It utilizes a patented design to ensure balanced power delivery from the power supply unit to the GPU, aiming to keep connector temperatures below the 105°C material safety limit.

Technical Specifications and Load Capacity

The ROG Equalizer increases the current load capacity per pin to 17A, a significant increase over the 9.2A supported by standard 12V-2×6 PCIe power cables. The hardware is compliant with both ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 standards.

To achieve these thermal and electrical targets, ASUS has utilized premium etched cables featuring tin-plated copper wires. According to company data, these materials allow the cable to operate at temperatures 50°C lower than the established safety limit.

Thermal Performance Testing

ASUS conducted an extreme test scenario to simulate current imbalance, a condition that often leads to overheating in conventional 12V-2×6 cables. During this test, the middle four wires of the +12V cable were removed to evaluate performance under a maximum current load of 600W (25A+0+0+0+0+25A).

Under these conditions, the ROG Equalizer maintained a temperature of approximately 73.4°C. In comparison, a standard 12V-2×6 PCIe cable reached approximately 146°C, exceeding safe operating limits.

Software Integration and Monitoring

The hardware is designed to integrate with the GPU Tweak III Power Detector+. By enabling ROG Equalizer mode within this software, users can activate a dual-layer protection system that combines real-time monitoring with hardware-level safeguards to maintain stability during heavy workloads.

ASUS has announced a planned free upgrade path for eligible existing ROG PSU users to transition to the new 12V-2×6 cable.
