A forest fire broke out Tuesday near La Pereda, a locality within the municipality of Llanes in the Asturias region of Spain, visible from the A-8 highway. The blaze occurred as southern winds, accompanied by temperatures nearing 27°C (80.6°F) on the coast, brought gusts exceeding 100 km/h (62 mph) to inland areas.
The regional government of Asturias declared a state of emergency (SITUATION 1) under the INFOPA forest fire plan shortly before 8:30 PM local time, citing the proliferation of fires across the principality. Alejandro Calvo, the regional counselor for Mobility, Environment and Emergency Management, made the declaration as the number of active fires reached twenty, affecting thirteen municipalities.
Currently, fires are being battled in Quirós, Mieres, Cangas del Narcea, Cangas de Onís, Grandas de Salime, Amieva, Langreo, Piloña, Grado, Laviana, Ibias, San Martín del Rey Aurelio, and Cabrales, in addition to the initial fire near La Pereda.
The fire risk index is currently rated as moderate in Llanes, Caravia, Colunga, Peñamellera Baja, Ribadedeva, and Ribadesella. However, municipalities located inland face a high fire risk, resulting in a prohibition on burning agricultural residue or vegetation.
