Aston Villa’s Top Four Challenge: Form, Injuries & Pressure Mount | Premier League 2024

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Aston Villa’s grip on third place in the Premier League is loosening, evidenced by a recent run of form that has seen individual performances decline and internal tensions surface, culminating in visible disagreements during a recent substitution. The team’s struggles come at a critical juncture, with upcoming matches against Arsenal and a return fixture against Villa Park against Chelsea poised to significantly impact their Champions League qualification hopes.

Villa have benefited from the inconsistent performances of their rivals this season, maintaining a decent position in the league table despite their own recent difficulties. However, Chelsea, in particular, represent a growing threat. Chelsea have dropped 17 points from winning positions at Stamford Bridge this season, and 19 points highlighting their own struggles with consistency. They travel to Arsenal on Sunday, seeking to capitalise on Villa’s slip-ups, before facing Villa at Villa Park on Wednesday in a match described as potentially season-defining.

The downturn in Villa’s form coincides with injuries to key players Boubacar Kamara, John McGinn, and Youri Tielemans, exposing a lack of depth within the squad. Ollie Watkins, a key attacking threat, has scored only once in his last 11 games, echoing a similar drought earlier in the season where he managed just one goal in his first 19 matches. Morgan Rogers is experiencing a comparable scoring slump.

The internal friction within the team became apparent during a recent match when Ezri Konsa and Amadou Onana urged Emi Buendia to leave the pitch more quickly during a substitution, leading to a visible exchange. Rogers acknowledged the pressure the team is feeling, stating, “It does weigh on us but it shouldn’t. We deserve to be here and we should not forget that. Our run lately has not been as good as usual but that is the battle of the Premier League. We are going to get back to our good run of wins.” He added, “We set our standards high and we have the ability to win every game…we are playing good football as a whole and there is nothing to worry about.”

Looking ahead, Villa face a challenging schedule beyond their immediate Premier League commitments. A Europa League tie against Lille on March 12th and a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on March 15th will further test their squad depth and resilience. Rogers emphasized the importance of the upcoming fixtures, stating, “They [the next fixtures] are the games you seek to play and, with so much on the line, we necessitate to reveal why we deserve to be where we are.”
