Asteroids Set to Pass Very Close to Earth

May 19, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Astronomers and space agencies are currently monitoring the trajectories of multiple asteroids passing in the vicinity of Earth. The observations, which have drawn attention due to the proximity of these celestial bodies, involve objects of varying sizes and distances, prompting renewed focus on planetary defense and tracking capabilities.

Among the objects currently being tracked is an asteroid comparable in size to a blue whale. Scientific monitoring networks have confirmed that this object is passing within a distance that, while not posing a threat of impact, is considered significantly close in astronomical terms. Reports indicate that the object is expected to pass at a distance of approximately 90,000 kilometers from our planet.

In addition to this specific event, researchers are tracking a second asteroid, bringing the total number of notable near-Earth approaches under current observation to two. These objects have been compared in scale to the meteor that impacted Chelyabinsk, Russia, in 2013, a comparison that highlights the ongoing effort by the global scientific community to detect and categorize Near-Earth Objects (NEOs).

The tracking of these objects is facilitated by advanced planetary radar and telescopic arrays, which allow scientists to refine orbital projections and determine the precise distance of these flybys. By utilizing 3D modeling and continuous data collection, agencies such as NASA and international partners maintain a constant watch on the asteroid population to predict future close approaches.

While these events serve as high-profile opportunities for public observation and scientific study, the focus remains on the technical validation of orbital data. The scientific community continues to analyze the flybys to verify the trajectory and velocity of the asteroids, ensuring that the data provided to the public accurately reflects the calculated path of each body as it moves through the solar system.

Despite the close proximity of these objects, institutional protocols remain unchanged, with experts continuing their scheduled observation and data collection routines to update the catalog of known near-Earth bodies.
