Arthur Fery Named in Great Britain Davis Cup Team to Face Ecuador

August 17, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The best-of-five tie determines a place in the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna, bringing high-stakes international tennis back to the capital.

Squad Selection and Roster Adjustments

According to coverage from Yahoo Sports and the East Lothian Courier, Lexus GB Davis Cup captain Leon Smith has assembled a squad featuring British number one Cameron Norrie, Arthur Fery, Henry Patten, and Lloyd Glasspool. Former world number four Jack Draper is absent from the initial selection following a persistent arm injury that kept him sidelined and dropped his ranking, though a fifth player will be added to the team closer to the start date.

Fery enters the selection following a career-making run at the All England Club. As a wildcard entry ranked 114th in the world before the tournament, Fery advanced to the semi-finals, becoming the lowest-ranked player to reach that stage since Goran Ivanisevic in 2001. That performance propelled his ranking to a career-high of 36, establishing him as a core component of Britain’s singles strategy alongside Norrie, who recently reclaimed the British number one ranking following strong ATP Tour performances in Los Cabos and Montreal.

Doubles Strength and Tactical Outlook

In the doubles department, Great Britain relies on the current world number one in doubles, Henry Patten, and resurgent specialist Lloyd Glasspool. Patten secured his second Wimbledon men’s doubles title in July—marking his fifth ATP crown of the season—while Glasspool reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals before capturing the ATP 500 Washington Open title alongside Julian Cash. Captain Leon Smith noted that calling on top singles players and elite doubles competitors provides the squad with a strong competitive advantage against a motivated Ecuadorian side.

The two-day format kicks off on September 19 with two singles matches. Day two opens with the doubles encounter, followed by up to two concluding singles matches if required to decide the winner of the World Group tie.

Looking Ahead to the World Group Tie

Fery acknowledged the unique challenge of playing at home in the World Group. “I am really proud to be able to represent GB again,” Fery stated, according to Yahoo Sports. “It is going to be a bit of a different scenario this time, at home, in the World Group and trying to qualify for the final eight. There might be some extra pressure, but I’m ready for it.” With limited tickets remaining via Ticketmaster, the stage is set for a high-intensity showdown as Great Britain fights to secure its spot in the final eight.
