Arsenal Ends Controversial “Visit Rwanda” Sponsorship
London, UK – Arsenal Football Club has terminated its sponsorship agreement with the Rwanda Development Board’s “Visit Rwanda” tourism campaign at the end of the current season, following sustained criticism regarding the partnership. The decision marks the end of a relationship that began in 2018 and was reportedly worth £30 million.
The move comes amid increasing scrutiny over Rwanda’s human rights record and allegations of sportswashing. Critics, including human rights organizations, have long argued that the sponsorship served to legitimize the Rwandan government and deflect attention from its controversial policies. While Arsenal has benefited financially from the deal, the club has faced mounting pressure to distance itself from a partnership perceived by many as ethically questionable.
Arsenal CEO Richard Garlick acknowledged the collaboration’s impact, stating, “Visit Rwanda’s commitment and support throughout our collaboration has played an important role in driving our ambitions forward - helping us to invest in our long-term vision of winning major titles in a financially enduring way.” He further expressed gratitude, adding, “We thank the Rwanda Development Board for their partnership and all we have achieved together.”
The club confirmed it nevertheless appreciates the Rwanda Development Board’s cooperation throughout the partnership.the future of Arsenal’s shirt sponsorship remains uncertain as the club seeks a new partner.
