Arsenal Preview: Arteta Fields Strong Side, Dowman Rested
Exciting young talent sits out Emirates Cup clash against Athletic Bilbao
Mikel Arteta has selected a near-full-strength squad for Arsenal’s Emirates Cup fixture against Athletic Bilbao. Notably absent from the lineup is teenage sensation Max Dowman, who has impressed during pre-season.
Dowman’s Break After Pre-Season Gains
The 15-year-old prodigy, Max Dowman, showcased his talent in the recent 3-2 defeat to Villarreal, earning his second penalty in three games. This followed a similar display against Newcastle United. However, the club has confirmed that Dowman is being granted some well-deserved time off following his rapid integration into first-team activities.
Saka and Strike Partners Ready
With Dowman resting, Bukayo Saka retains his starting position on the right wing. He will be joined by Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Martinelli in a formidable attacking trio. This means Noni Madueke will have to wait longer for his full debut.
Midfield Overhaul and Defensive Reinforcements
Arteta has made significant alterations in midfield, introducing Martin Odegaard, Martin Zubimendi, and Declan Rice. This trio is anticipated to form the core midfield for the upcoming 2025-26 season. The defence also sees changes, with Gabriel Magalhaes and Jurrien Timber returning to action and slotting in despite recent injury layoffs. William Saliba and David Raya will continue in their defensive roles, while Riccardo Calafiori starts at left-back after recovering from injury, with Myles Lewis-Skelly moving to the bench.
Bench Strength and Potential Exits
Kai Havertz is available for selection on the bench after recovering from a minor knock. Leandro Trossard remains sidelined as he continues his rehabilitation from a groin issue sustained in Asia. Albert Sambi Lokonga and Reiss Nelson are among the substitutes, with both players expected to depart the club. Fabio Vieira and Karl Hein have been omitted, also indicating likely imminent transfers.
Key Bilbao Duo Included
For Athletic Bilbao, former Arsenal target Nico Williams has been named in the starting lineup, alongside his brother Inaki Williams. This pre-season friendly offers a strong test for Arteta‘s squad as they prepare for the new season.
