Arsenal Overcome Real Madrid with Second-Half Comeback, Manager Praises Team’s Composure
LONDON – Arsenal secured a 2-1 victory over Real madrid in the Champions league on Wednesday, fueled by a pair of second-half headers from Alessia Russo. The win comes after a recent run of frustrating results for the Gunners, including a 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in their previous champions League contest.
The result demonstrates Arsenal’s ability to remain composed under pressure, a quality highlighted by manager Slegers following the match. This victory is crucial for arsenal’s positioning in the league phase of the competition, currently placing them ninth with six points, while Madrid sits sixth on seven.
Caroline Weir opened the scoring for real Madrid with a volley before halftime. However,Arsenal responded after the break with Russo’s two headed goals, turning the tide and securing the win.
“proud, I think not ideal going 1-0 down from a set piece at the end of the first half but we all stayed very calm,” Slegers told Disney Plus. “Coaches, tech staff and players in the changing room spoke about a couple of details. really happy with how the players stayed so calm on the pitch in the second half as it’s not an easy scenario where ther was already pressure on us ahead of this game.”
Russo echoed her manager’s sentiments, stating,”It was a really critically important win. We’ve probably not had the results that we’ve wanted in the last block, but it was important to come here and pick up a result tonight in the Champions League. We’re really happy.”
Despite the defeat, Weir acknowledged Arsenal’s strong performance. “Nice to score but one goal wasn’t really enough. We needed a bit more in the second half,” she said. “We created a little bit more chances and Arsenal were always in the game, obviously came out in the second half and scored two. A little bit disappointed. I think we played well but it wasn’t quite enough tonight. Against a top team, Arsenal, it’s always going to be challenging.”
