Arne Slot Responds to Wayne Rooney’s ‘Aura’ Claim After Premier League Win

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has defended his leadership, citing last season’s Premier League title win as evidence of his “aura,” following a pointed critique from former Manchester United and Everton striker Wayne Rooney.

Rooney, speaking on the Overlap podcast, questioned Slot’s suitability for the Liverpool role, stating he lacked the commanding presence expected of a manager at that level. “I have met him a few times. He was a nice fella but I just don’t think, for Liverpool, he’s got that aura about him,” Rooney said. “Maybe What we have is because you have just come off the back of Jürgen Klopp and it’s going to be difficult for anyone to have that, but I just don’t think there’s that aura about him.”

Slot addressed Rooney’s comments ahead of Liverpool’s match against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, a fixture where the team seeks to improve their standing in the race for Champions League qualification. Currently sixth in the league, Liverpool’s performance this season has drawn scrutiny, leading Rooney to suggest Slot was effectively “in an audition” to retain his position, with Champions League qualification seen as a key determinant of his future.

“We are all different,” Slot responded. “The only thing we have in common, Jürgen and me, is that we both won the league – and that’s not too awful, is it? I think the more a manager wins, the more aura he has. I don’t know if you agree with Wayne Rooney, by the way, but if this would be the general opinion then I think people would probably tell you last season I had more aura than this season.”

Slot acknowledged Klopp’s established presence, stating, “But maybe he’s the only one who has this opinion; I don’t know, you tell me. It’s the first time that I heard this but I think it’s fair to say that Jürgen definitely has an aura. I can talk about him, not about myself, but he definitely had that. But a winning manager has an aura as well.”

The upcoming match at the City Ground presents a challenge for Slot, as he faces Vítor Pereira, Forest’s fourth head coach of the season. This follows the departure of Sean Dyche, whose strained relationship with the Forest squad was cited as a contributing factor to his dismissal. This turnover highlights the precarious position of managers in the modern game, where player dynamics can significantly impact a head coach’s tenure.

Slot also touched upon the power dynamics within the club, asserting the ultimate authority of the owners. “I like to do what I’m doing now and that’s enough for me,” he said. “It doesn’t matter who’s the most important person or not at the club. I think it’s always the owners, isn’t it? They have to hire the sporting director, they have to hire the head coach. If they build the right decisions then it’s a better chance to be successful.”
