Liverpool to honor Diogo Jota‘s Contract,Providing Financial Support to Family Following Tragic Death
LIVERPOOL,ENGLAND – Liverpool Football Club will ensure the family of the late Diogo Jota receives financial security following his tragic death in a car accident on July 3rd,with owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) committing to pay the remainder of the striker’s contract. The 28-year-old, along with his brother André Silva, died in Spain just eleven days after marrying his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, mother to their three young children.
The contract, originally set to run until 2027 and reportedly worth approximately £140,000 per week, will be fully honored by FSG, a gesture Arne Slot described as “not normal in football.” The Liverpool head coach revealed the decision in a recent interview with Ally McCoist for TNT Sports.
“Owners are mainly criticised, like managers, but the way they’ve handled this situation by paying his wife and his children all the money from the contract is…” Slot stated, pausing to emphasize the significance of the act.
Slot also spoke candidly about the emotional challenge of continuing professional duties amidst the profound grief. ”The way the fans conducted themselves after that tragedy, how many flowers there were, all the memorials, I can almost get emotional thinking about it. It’s astonishing what our fans have done and our players as well, the way they have conducted themselves in and around the funeral.”
He continued, reflecting on the impact on Jota’s family: “And then we have to train again. There are moments where I feel: ‘What must his wife and his children feel now?’ It sounds so hard but our life continues. Peopel expect from me that I prepare them for ever and that sometimes feels a bit difficult knowing how hard it is for the family and for the parents in the phase they are still going through and will go through for the rest of their lives.”
The club has not released specific details regarding the financial arrangements, but the commitment from FSG provides a significant measure of support for Cardoso and their children during an incredibly difficult time.
