Arizona Gymnastics Finishes 5th at Big 12 Championships | NCAA Regionals Next
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — The University of Arizona gymnastics team finished fifth at the Sizeable 12 Championships on Saturday, scoring a 194.725 at the Maverik Center. Utah secured the conference title with a 197.675, marking their second consecutive Big 12 championship since joining the league, according to reports from the Deseret News.
Arizona’s performance saw them place ahead of West Virginia (194.250) but behind Arizona State, who finished fourth with a 195.225. Denver took second place with a 196.575, and Brigham Young University rounded out the top three with a 196.175.
The GymCats began the competition on the floor exercise, achieving a team score of 49.325. Junior Sophie Derr led the way with a career-best 9.925. Freshman Riley Carman and junior Tirzah Wise both recorded career-high scores of 9.875, while Elizabeth LaRusso contributed a 9.850.
On vault, Arizona posted a 48.750. Derr and Jessa Janicke both earned 9.775s, followed closely by Ainsley Greever with a 9.75. The team faced challenges on the uneven bars, recording a 47.400. Derr again led the Wildcats on this apparatus with a 9.80, and Sadie Smith added a 9.725.
Arizona concluded the meet on the balance beam, achieving a 49.250. Abigayle Martin and Wise anchored the rotation with matching scores of 9.90, while Derr added a 9.85. Derr’s performance throughout the meet was particularly strong, achieving career and season highs on both floor (9.925) and beam (9.85). Wise also achieved a career-best on floor and matched her career high on beam with a 9.90.
The Arizona gymnastics team now awaits the announcement of its NCAA Regional selection, scheduled for Monday at 9 a.m. MST on ESPNU.
