Ariana Grande Granted Expedited Discovery in Unreleased Music Hacker Lawsuit

August 20, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Ariana Grande has been granted expedited discovery in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles against unidentified hackers who allegedly stole, leaked, and sold dozens of unreleased tracks. Filed ahead of the release of her eighth studio album, Petal, the lawsuit targets digital intrusions that compromised the private devices of producers and creative collaborators over multiple years.

Unraveling the Digital Breaches and Dark Web Sales

According to court documents filed in Los Angeles, the scale of the digital theft spans several years of targeted intrusions. Per the legal filing highlighted by Dexerto, hackers targeted producers, photographers, and other members of Grande’s creative team, successfully exfiltrating 45 unreleased songs in 2023 alone. The suit details that these bad actors subsequently sold the illicit material on the dark web for significant sums of money. Additional breaches exposed mobile devices, unreleased masters, demos, and recording session footage.

The methods deployed by the unknown defendants relied on social engineering. According to reporting from GoldDerby, the intrusions began as early as 2019 when a hacker accessed a photographer’s cloud storage account. Subsequent attacks included a 2024 phishing scheme where the perpetrators created an email account impersonating a photographer to trick a digital technician into handing over unreleased images.

Legal Framework and Copyright Infringement Realities

The formal complaint lodged by Grande’s legal team encompasses multiple civil violations, including invasion of privacy, violation of California computer hacking laws, and conversion. The filing asserts that the defendants’ actions caused substantial and irreparable harm to both her privacy and career trajectory.

Precedents in Celebrity Privacy and Unreleased Material

The fight to control leaked artistic property mirrors historical challenges within the music industry. High-profile digital intrusions have targeted major recording artists for over a decade, such as in 2012 when a Florida man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a wiretapping scheme that involved accessing the email inboxes of stars like Scarlett Johansson and Mila Kunis. More recently, artists have occasionally reclaimed narrative control over leaked assets, as seen when Beyoncé officially shared “Morning Dew (Donk),” an unreleased demo that originally wound up online in 2021.

As Grande prepares for the commercial rollout of Petal, the expedited discovery phase grants her attorneys the legal tools required to identify the perpetrators. Uncovering the identities behind these dark web transactions remains the primary objective as the litigation moves forward.
