Arcadian Shores Beach Renourishment Complete, Myrtle Beach Project Resumes
Crews have completed the localized beach renourishment project at Arcadian Shores, marking a transition in regional coastal infrastructure efforts. The work, which focused on the stretch of coastline between Singleton Swash and Apache Pier, was managed as a partnership between Horry County and the City of Myrtle Beach.
Following the conclusion of this local initiative, the contractor, Great Lakes Dredge &. Dock (GLDD), is shifting its operations to resume work on a separate, federal project. This broader effort is overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and focuses on renourishing segments of the coastline in southern Myrtle Beach.
The operational timeline is dictated by the goal of finishing both the local and federal projects before the height of the hurricane season. According to Horry County Engineer Andrew Markunas, the contractor’s schedule remains contingent upon equipment availability and prevailing weather conditions.
As the construction equipment moves to federal zones, the project scope will extend beyond the initial Arcadian Shores site to include areas in Garden City and Surfside Beach later this summer. Throughout the duration of these coastal improvements, officials have implemented daily monitoring protocols to identify and protect sea turtle nests and migratory shorebird habitats. Operations are subject to pause if nests are discovered within the active work zones to allow for the implementation of protective measures or relocation.
While the local Arcadian Shores project has reached its conclusion, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains an interactive online tracker for the public to monitor the daily progress of the ongoing federal renourishment work in southern Myrtle Beach.
