Apple’s Next 2 Years: Foldable iPhone This Year & Revolutionary 20th Anniversary Model in 2027
Apple Prepares for Major iPhone Overhaul with Foldable Device This Year, Radical Redesign in 2027
Apple is poised to unveil its first foldable iPhone as early as this year, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, marking the beginning of what Bloomberg has described as the “biggest set of iPhone revamps” in the product’s history. The company is also developing a dramatically redesigned iPhone, slated for release in 2027 to coincide with the iPhone’s 20th anniversary, featuring a nearly borderless display.
The foldable iPhone, expected to be announced alongside the iPhone 18 Pro in September, is facing production challenges inherent in manufacturing a foldable screen for the first time. Apple is utilizing a dual-layer ultra-thin glass structure, with the display sandwiched between the layers and isolated from the hinge mechanism, aiming to distribute mechanical stress and minimize the visibility of a crease over time. Samsung is reportedly supplying the display for this device, having established itself as a leader in foldable screen technology.
According to sources familiar with the supply chain, the foldable iPhone will feature an external display of approximately 5.5 inches and an internal display of around 7.7 inches, adopting a “book-style” form factor. Apple is also planning to reintroduce Touch ID, integrating it into the power button, potentially as an alternative or complement to Face ID. The device is projected to be priced between 2,000 and 2,500 euros, making it the most expensive iPhone to date.
Beyond the foldable model, Apple is working towards a more ambitious redesign for the 2027 iPhone. The goal is to create a device with a truly edge-to-edge display, eliminating the notch, Dynamic Island and any other visual interruptions. This will require overcoming significant technological hurdles, particularly in developing a functional under-display camera capable of maintaining image quality.
Overseeing these ambitious projects is John Ternus, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. Ternus has recently taken on increased responsibility, now overseeing both hardware and design teams, as well as the development of AI-powered devices, including smart glasses, AirPods with cameras, and a wearable pendant. He also championed the development of a nearly 20-inch-wide foldable iPad that could function as a laptop-tablet hybrid.
Ternus’s rise within Apple has been deliberate, and he is widely considered the leading candidate to succeed Tim Cook as CEO. While there are currently “few signs internally” that Cook is preparing to step down, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Ternus is being positioned as the likely successor when Cook does eventually decide to retire. Cook reportedly granted Ternus oversight of Apple’s design teams at the end of last year, and Ternus has been increasingly visible in public appearances related to product announcements.
The iPhone 2027 is intended to be a showcase of Apple’s technological capabilities, a device that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible. The success of both the foldable iPhone and the 2027 redesign will be a key test for Ternus, demonstrating his ability to deliver innovative products and lead Apple into its next era.
