Apple’s $499 MacBook vs. $549 AirPods Max: What’s Going On?

March 20, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Apple’s latest product releases have revealed a surprising price disparity: the company’s newly unveiled MacBook Neo, starting at $499 for students and $599 for other customers, costs less than its recent over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max 2, priced at $549.

The MacBook Neo, released last week, is being marketed as Apple’s most affordable laptop to date. The device features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, the Magic Keyboard, and Touch ID, and is available in four colors: Silver, Blush, Citrus, and Indigo. Apple has emphasized the laptop’s durability, noting it is constructed with recycled aluminum, achieving 60 percent recycled content by weight – the highest of any Apple product.

Just five days after the MacBook Neo’s arrival, Apple announced the AirPods Max 2, featuring a new chip. The headphones’ $549 price tag has drawn attention, particularly as it exceeds the cost of the base model MacBook Neo for students. Apple does not offer an education discount on the AirPods Max line.

The pricing difference has prompted questions about Apple’s strategy and the cost structures of its various product lines. According to a recent report, Apple has made significant efforts to reduce costs in the development of the MacBook Neo. The company is also reportedly focusing on future iterations of its AirPods line, potentially indicating a prioritization of resources.

The announcement of the new products coincides with Apple’s 50th-anniversary celebrations, which include surprise events at Apple stores worldwide. Last Friday, an Alicia Keys concert was held at New York’s Grand Central Terminal as part of the festivities.
