Apple WWDC 2024: iOS 27, Siri App & AI Updates Revealed
Apple has scheduled its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) to begin June 8th, with a keynote address and “Platforms State of the Union” planned for that day. The event, which runs through June 12th, will largely be held online, featuring 100 video sessions, though an in-person component will be available for developers on June 8th, offering access to special labs and activities.
The Cupertino-based technology giant highlighted artificial intelligence as a central focus for WWDC26, stating the conference will “spotlight incredible updates for Apple platforms, including AI advancements and exciting new software and developer tools.” This emphasis comes as Apple prepares to unveil a significantly updated Siri, its voice assistant, which has lagged behind competitors in recent years.
According to reports, Apple is integrating Gemini foundation models to enhance Apple Intelligence and Siri. The company recently launched a series of hardware updates, including a more affordable MacBook Neo and chip upgrades for the MacBook Pro, but the new Siri release is anticipated to be a key component of the upcoming iOS 27 update. Some analysts suggest that other device releases, such as a new smart home hub, HomePod, and Apple TV box, may be contingent on the new Siri functionality.
Apple is also reportedly testing a standalone Siri app as part of its broader AI update. The company’s press release indicates that iOS 27, along with updates to iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS, will be unveiled at the conference. The event is seen as a crucial opportunity for Apple to demonstrate its progress in AI and address concerns about Siri’s capabilities.
The timing of the WWDC announcement comes as Apple faces increasing pressure to deliver on its AI promises. The company’s approach to AI has been closely watched, particularly in comparison to competitors like Google and Samsung, who have recently launched AI features. Apple’s strategy appears to be focused on integrating AI deeply into its existing ecosystem, rather than releasing standalone AI products.
