Apple MacBook Neo Price: Is It Worth the Cost?

March 22, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

A new MacBook Neo is selling for over $900 in some international markets, sparking debate about Apple’s pricing strategy and accessibility, according to online discussions and confirmed retail listings.

Apple unveiled the MacBook Neo on Sunday, March 22, 2026, positioning it as a budget-friendly entry point into the MacBook ecosystem. The base model, featuring Apple’s A18 Pro processor, 8GB of unified memory, and a 256GB solid-state drive, is priced at $599 for US customers, and $499 for students and educators. However, pricing varies significantly by region.

Online forums and social media platforms have been flooded with reports from customers outside the United States facing substantially higher costs. One user, posting on a forum with over 624 votes and 101 comments, stated that the MacBook Neo is priced above $900 in their country, criticizing Apple’s pricing as “expensive.”

The MacBook Neo distinguishes itself from other Apple laptops through its use of the A18 Pro chip, originally featured in the 2024 iPhone 16 Pro. According to PCMag, Apple is utilizing “binned” A18 Pro chips – processors that meet functional standards but do not fully achieve original specifications – in the MacBook Neo, a practice that helps reduce production costs. The laptop also features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, offering one billion colors, and is available in silver, blush, citrus, and indigo.

AppleInsider reports that some features were reduced or eliminated to meet the $599 price point. CNET notes that Touch ID is an additional $100 expense, and the base model includes a relatively small 256GB SSD. The MacBook Neo also lacks MagSafe charging and features a smaller battery compared to the MacBook Air.

Despite these compromises, reviews have been largely positive. PCMag awarded the MacBook Neo its Editors’ Choice award, praising its build quality, screen, battery life, and speed relative to its price range. CNET described the laptop as a “perfect compromise,” offering a premium design and durability at a more affordable price. Apple’s website highlights the laptop’s durable recycled aluminum enclosure, reaching 60 percent recycled content by weight, the highest percentage in any Apple product.

The MacBook Neo’s configuration is limited, with only a single upgrade option available: increasing storage to 512GB. The 8GB of unified memory is not upgradable, as it is integrated into the A18 Pro system-on-chip.

Apple has not responded to requests for comment regarding the price discrepancies in international markets. The company has not announced any plans to adjust pricing or address concerns about accessibility.
