Apple Mac Studio M5 and MacBook Pro OLED Delayed: Latest News and Rumors

April 19, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Apple delays Mac Studio M5 launch amid ongoing RAM shortages Apple has postponed the release of its next-generation Mac Studio models equipped with the M5 chip to October, according to reports from French technology outlets MacGeneration and iPhoneAddict.fr. The delay is attributed to persistent shortages of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and unified memory architecture components critical to Apple’s silicon design, which have constrained production capacity across its professional desktop and laptop lines. The Mac Studio M5, expected to succeed the M2 Ultra and M3 Max-based models introduced in 2023, was initially anticipated for a spring or summer 2024 launch. Industry analysts had projected the chip would deliver significant gains in CPU and GPU performance, leveraging TSMC’s 3nm process node and architectural improvements over the M4 series used in recent iPad Pro models. However, supply chain constraints — particularly in securing sufficient volumes of LPDDR5X and HBM3 memory — have forced Apple to push back volume production. Sources familiar with Apple’s component sourcing indicate that the company is prioritizing memory allocation for its iPhone 16 series and M4-powered MacBook Pro models, which are scheduled for release later in 2024. The MacBook Pro OLED touch model, also rumored to feature an M5 variant, has similarly been delayed due to the same component shortages. Apple has not officially confirmed the specifications or release timeline for either device. The delay comes as Apple continues to face scrutiny over the availability of its Mac mini, which disappeared from the Apple Store in select regions earlier this year. While Apple has not issued a public statement on the Mac mini’s absence, inventory data from regional retailers suggests the device is being phased out to clear channels ahead of an anticipated M4-based refresh, expected later in 2024. Despite the setbacks, Apple is reportedly preparing multiple latest Mac models for release before the end of the year. These include updated versions of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines, as well as a potential high-end iMac refresh featuring the M4 chip. The company has not disclosed whether any of these will incorporate OLED displays or touch-enabled interfaces, though patents filed in 2023 suggest exploration of such technologies for future desktop and laptop products. Apple’s semiconductor strategy remains tightly coupled to TSMC’s advanced node capacity, with the M5 chip expected to represent a significant evolution in unified memory bandwidth and neural engine performance. However, without confirmation from Apple or its suppliers, the exact specifications, performance benchmarks, and release volume for the M5 Mac Studio remain unverified. As of now, Apple has not announced a new launch event for the delayed Mac Studio M5 or MacBook Pro OLED models. The company’s next major product presentation is expected in September, traditionally timed ahead of the holiday season, but no official agenda has been released. Retailers and distributors have not received updated shipment schedules for the delayed models, and Apple’s online store continues to list current-generation Mac Studio configurations as available for purchase.
