Apple Lockdown Mode: No Successful Spyware Attacks Reported

March 29, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Apple has affirmed the continued effectiveness of its most advanced security feature, stating that since the 2022 introduction of Lockdown Mode, the company has no confirmed instances of successful spyware attacks against devices with the function enabled. The assertion comes as concerns mount over the increasing sophistication of digital espionage targeting journalists, activists and political figures.

Lockdown Mode, available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, drastically reduces the functionality of the operating system to minimize the potential attack surface. It is designed for a limited set of users who, due to their profession or profile, may be targets of highly sophisticated digital threats, potentially including state-sponsored attacks.

When activated, Lockdown Mode implements several key changes to system behavior. It blocks most types of attachments in messaging applications, disabling the preview of links and limiting file transfers to specific video, image, and audio formats. The feature also disables certain complex web technologies that are frequently exploited by attackers, potentially causing slower loading times or rendering issues on some websites. Automatic connections to untrusted Wi-Fi networks are also prevented, and other potentially vulnerable functions are restricted.

Researchers have documented at least two instances where Lockdown Mode successfully prevented actual spyware infections. One case involved an attack linked to Pegasus, spyware developed by the NSO Group, an Israeli firm that has faced international criticism for its clients’ alleged employ of the tool against dissidents and journalists. Another incident involved an attempted intrusion utilizing Predator, spyware associated with Intellexa, a European company also linked to the development and deployment of surveillance technology.

According to security researchers, some spyware programs are now designed to automatically abort an attack if they detect that Lockdown Mode is active. This tactic is intended to avoid leaving traces and hinder detection, demonstrating the evolving nature of the threat landscape and the proactive measures Apple is taking to counter it.

Apple’s commitment to security with Lockdown Mode reinforces its positioning as a company prioritizing user privacy. Though, the feature highlights the inherent trade-off between security and usability. Activating Lockdown Mode inevitably impacts the user experience, restricting access to certain features and functionalities. While effective for high-risk individuals, it may be considered an overreach for the average user.

The development of Lockdown Mode followed a surge in reports of sophisticated attacks leveraging “zero-click” exploits – attacks that require no user interaction to compromise a device. These attacks have targeted high-profile individuals globally, including journalists, activists, politicians, and even members of royalty. Apple created Lockdown Mode to significantly reduce the “attack surface” of its devices, effectively closing many of the entry points commonly exploited by hackers.

As spyware becomes increasingly sophisticated, particularly that developed by state actors or specialized private companies, tools like Lockdown Mode may develop into a standard for individuals with sensitive profiles. Apple has not commented on future iterations of the feature or plans to expand its availability beyond the current user base.
