Apple Launches ‘Apple Upgrade’ Program: Leasing Option for iPhones, iPads, and More

July 27, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Apple Upgrade Program Launch: Hardware Leasing Changes and Financing Impact

Simultaneously, the company will stop accepting new sign-ups for the existing iPhone Upgrade Program, marking a structural shift in how consumers finance premium hardware ecosystems through a partnership with buy-now, pay-later provider Klarna.

The Tech TL;DR:

  • Financing Shift: Apple is partnering with Klarna to offer hardware leasing rather than traditional consumer financing, extending terms to 24 or 36 months depending on the device class.
  • Hardware Exclusions: Entry-level and lower-priced hardware—specifically the Apple Watch SE, base iPad, iPhone 16, and MacBook Neo—are excluded from eligibility.

Architectural Shifts in Hardware Leasing and Financing Terms

The transition from the legacy iPhone Upgrade Program to the new Apple Upgrade model introduces distinct structural differences in contract duration and device eligibility. Per Bloomberg’s reporting, the program functions strictly as a lease rather than a traditional hardware financing loan. Customers can lease most iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch models, adhering to strict term limits: 24 months for iPhones and Apple Watches, and 36 months for iPads and Macs. At the conclusion of these terms, lessees retain options to return the hardware, upgrade to a newer iteration, or pay a designated fee to keep the device.

Devices categorized as lower-priced entry points—including the Apple Watch SE, the entry-level iPad, the iPhone 16, and the MacBook Neo—will not qualify for the Apple Upgrade program.

Integration of Buy-Now-Pay-Later Infrastructure via Klarna

The architectural backend of the new leasing framework relies on a strategic partnership with Klarna. By integrating buy-now, pay-later (BNPL) infrastructure directly into the Apple retail pipeline, the corporation aims to advertise lower monthly payment thresholds compared to historical financing models. However, a significant operational divergence from the older iPhone Upgrade Program involves bundled services. Unlike its predecessor, the new Apple Upgrade plans will reportedly omit AppleCare+ coverage from the standard monthly leasing price, requiring users or IT administrators to provision hardware protection separately.

For existing subscribers of the legacy iPhone Upgrade Program, Gurman noted that current participants will be permitted to remain in their active programs “for the time being,” though the long-term migration path points toward mandatory adoption of the Klarna-backed leasing structure for all future hardware refreshes.
